“Where is Yecla and what is Monastrell?”
The real question should be “what is Mourvedre?” as it is actually the native Spanish grape Monastrell, discovered near Valencia 600 years ago. Yecla is about 80 miles southwest of Valencia and its rocky and very mineral rich soils produce very deeply flavored wines.
La Purisima (Yecla) Monastrell 2017
Initial aromas include cherries, plums, and fresh baked bread. The most prominent flavors are of cocoa and dried cherries but with an enticing freshness and soft balanced mouthfeel. Interesting tannins complement the flavors and balance and there is a long, elegant, and velvety finish.

The Crianza is a blend of 75% Monastrell, 18% Syrah, and 7% Garnacha. Aromas include cherries, plums, and old roses which complement fresh flavors of red plums and tart cherries. The progression across the palate shows refreshing minerality, soft and round tannins, and a very balanced finish.

This wine is a blend of 85% Monastrell, 10% Syrah, and 5% Garnacha. Aromas include cherries, plums, and hints of freshly baked hard rolls along with nuances of many other rich fruit aromas. The interesting flavor profile includes very ripe and juicy yellow peaches complemented with dark cherries. The aromas and flavors are balanced with a medium mouthfeel which is perfectly balanced across the palate. The finish builds again with long, rich, powerful sensations along with interesting spicy notes.

This wine is 100% Monastrell and only made in exceptional years. The vineyards are at least 50 years old and consist solely of ungrafted vines. There are interesting aroma hints of dill and fennel that evolve into an array of rich fruit aromas of plums, blackcurrants, blueberries, and cherries. The palate is rich with dark fruits and hints of cocoa, mint, and licorice along with medium to full mouthfeel, perfect balance and acidity. The finish continues the delightful experience of this beautiful wine. Long, smooth, and memorable.
